Construction Monitoring
Monitoring during construction can be the most appropriate way to address cultural resources requirements for some projects. This applies when ground disturbance is limited or located in previously developed settings, or as a precautionary measure due to nearby cultural resources. We work closely with contractors to minimize disruption to construction schedules.
When monitoring is indicated, a qualified archaeologist is present during ground-disturbing activities, observing excavations and examining backdirt for cultural materials. If the excavation encounters a cultural feature, work is briefly paused for the monitor to examine and record it using a mobile app. If human remains or substantial subsurface cultural deposits are encountered, work may be halted for agency notification and for a larger team of archaeologists to excavate and record them.
Some projects in southern Arizona require Tribal monitors. We work with Tribal offices to identify those personnel.
