Bioarchaeology and Osteology
With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Rachael Byrd leads Desert Archaeology’s bioarchaeological work. Bioarchaeology involves the identification, recovery, and documentation of human remains from archaeological contexts. Using standardized non-destructive methods, bioarchaeologists can provide important observations and information about past people’s health and diet, affinity, and behavior.
Dr. Byrd provides respectful field and laboratory services that meet federal, state, and Tribal requirements. In addition to reconstructing individual and group biological profiles, she is interested in integrating bioarchaeological interpretations into broader regional understanding of movement, migration, and kinship patterns.
