In the Mohave Valley of northwestern Arizona along Fivemile Wash and Route 66

The Fivemile Wash survey was conducted in compliance with the Bureau of Land Management’s responsibilities under Section 110 [a][2][A] of the National Historic Preservation Act (16 U.S.C. 470). Eight sites were located in 1,195 acres centered on a 2.6-mile-long section of the wash located between the Colorado River floodplain and the Black Mountains in Mohave County, Arizona. Seven of the sites are aboriginal/prehistoric lithic scatters, exhibiting early-stage reduction of choice lithic materials found among cobble and gravel deposits along the wash. A 1/4-mile-section of historic Route 66 was also documented. The eligibility of all sites for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places was evaluated.

In the Mohave Valley of Northwestern Arizona Along Fivemile Wash and Route 66
The Desert crew records artifacts found at a site situated on a small knoll of gravel in the middle of Fivemile Wash.
The crew surveys a landscape strewn with basalt boulders.
The crew flags artifacts scattered among river gravels exposed at the top of a narrow finger ridge above the Fivemile Wash drainage.
n abundance of usable lithic material could be found in the river gravels exposed throughout the wash. The photo illustrates a typical find within the project area: cores and core reduction debris essentially abandoned in place. In all probability, this episode of reduction produced a few choice flakes that left with the prehistoric knapper.
